What is a
One-Act Play?

A one act play, or more commonly "one act", is a short play that takes place in one act or scene, as opposed to plays that take place over a number of scenes in one or more acts.
The origin of the one act play can be traced back almost to the very beginning of drama.
The Cyclops
, a satyr play by Euripides, is an early example of the one act play!

Our Story

Lunchbox Theatre is recognized as one of the most successful noon-time theatre companies in the world.
From a foundation of one-act plays, we’re committed to creating and performing high quality theatrical works.
Lunchbox Theatre delivers a unique experience to its audience - upbeat performances in an intimate and comfortable atmosphere. Located on the second level of Bow Valley Square in downtown Calgary, Lunchbox Theatre is wheelchair accessible and offers ample parking. Patrons are encouraged to visit the many retail shops and food court vendors while in Bow Valley Square, purchase lunch and then enjoy the play while you eat! This audience-friendly approach makes Lunchbox Theatre an ideal place to introduce theatre to new audiences, young and old.

Petro-Canada Stage One
Lunchbox Theatre is also Canada's leading development source and producer of new one-act plays, through THE PETRO-CANADA STAGE ONE PLAYS. At the end of each season, Lunchbox Theatre holds a series of readings of new works and invites audience members to give feedback during a discussion period. Lunchbox Theatre has proved, through THE PETRO-CANADA STAGE ONE PLAYS, that a small, Calgary-based company can create world-class works that have the potential for impact far beyond this city.

BD&P Emerging Directors Program
In a further contribution to nurturing Canadian talent, Lunchbox Theatre recently announced the addition of the BD&P Emerging Directors Program. This remarkable program is the result of a unique partnership between leading Canadian law firm Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer LLP (BD&P) and Lunchbox Theatre. It affords mentoring and practical experience to promising up-and-coming directors who have the opportunity to work with leading
Calgary theatre directors and then direct a showcase production of their own at the end of the Lunchbox Theatre season.
