  • Lunchbox Theatre presents engaging, accessible one-act plays primarily at lunchtime, focusing on new Canadian works that examine and explore socially relevant issues. We seek to provide memorable experiences that reflect today’s realities and expand our understanding of life. Lunchbox is a hub for artistic learning — for audiences, artists as well as new plays. Since 1975, Lunchbox Theatre has been motivated by our founders’ desire “to present live theatre during the lunch hour to downtown shoppers and workers.”

  • You are welcome to pack your lunch, dinner or a snack and eat it during the show! We offer complimentary tea and coffee at our weekday noon shows, and the full bar will be open before most weekend performances to purchase snacks and drinks. There are no sandwiches/lunches for sale at the venue.

  • Lunchbox Theatre performances take place at The Studio at Vertigo Theatre, at the base of the landmark Calgary Tower, located at #161, 115 - 9 Ave. SE, in downtown Calgary. Parking in the area can be limited when other events are occurring. Below are some parking details and options.

    Parkopedia is a great place to find nearby parking. 

    There are a few options for parking:

    The Palliser Parkade parking lot that is attached to our building is a great option for anyone with mobility challenges.

    There is underground parking off Macleod Trail North in the basement of the Arts Commons. The entrance is on the left on Macleod Trail North just north/after the lights at 9th Avenue. The CPA has information and availability for the parkade on their website.

    The City Hall Parkade is located nearby. The entrance is on the left on 9th Avenue SE just east/after the lights at Macleod Trail. The CPA has information and availability for the parkade on their website.

    On-street parking is available along 9th Avenue as well as paid surface lots.

    The Platform Calgary parkade is also located close by (outside). The entrance is on the right on 9th Avenue SE east/after the lights at Macleod Trail. The CPA has information and availability for the parkade on their website.

Accessibility

There is an accessible entrance on 9th Avenue SW.

The best option for accessible parking near the Calgary Tower is in the Palliser Parkade (there is a fee for this option). The Palliser Parkade is adjacent to the Calgary Tower and is covered. You can access the parkade from either 10th Avenue SW or 9th Avenue SW. They have an elevator that takes you to the ground level where you will find the entrance to the Studio at Vertigo Theatre, where Lunchbox plays are performed.

There are elevators just inside the doors of Vertigo Theatre.

Wheelchair-accessible as well as gender-neutral restrooms are available.

Seating in the theatre is removed to make room for wheelchairs. The first row is on the floor so there are no stairs for the mobility challenged.

Lunchbox Theatre is proud to work with Inside Out Theatre to offer additional accessibility options at select performances that are available to everyone. We offer ASL Interpreted performances, Audio Description performances, and Relaxed performances on certain dates. These dates will also be Super Mask Friendly.

  • Lunchbox Theatre is proud to offer an ASL translated performance for select shows in our season.

    There will be no changes to the production on stage. The interpreters will stand on the seating level to audience left side of the stage and will be lit accordingly throughout the performance so that our patrons who require this support can see them.

    Our interpreters are working very hard to give the most accurate interpretation of the language on stage, so we ask that patrons please refrain from speaking to them during the performance.

  • Audio described shows can help people who are blind or have low vision. The action of the play is described through a headset by trained describers so that you can follow what is happening visually onstage along with the rest of the audience. There is no change to the performance, and audience members that are not using the headsets to access audio description will likely not even know it’s happening.

  • Relaxed performances are designed to welcome audience members who would benefit from a more relaxed environment. Small modifications are made to the production and the patron experience to “relax” the experience (for example audience lights are left slightly on, so that it is easier to come and go from your seat if needed.) Anyone can purchase tickets to attend the relaxed show, but the people who have gained the most benefit from relaxed performances in the past include individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dementia, Sensory Disorders and more! All are welcome at a Relaxed Performance, and the changes do not interfere with the performance. Whether you may need to make some noise, move around a bit, leave for a break in the lobby, you're welcome in our theatre.

  • Our priority is providing a safe environment for our patrons, staff, volunteers and artists. In an effort to support the comfort levels of all our guests, we have decided to offer select “Super Mask Friendly Performances” this season. We hope this option gives reassurance of Lunchbox Theatre's support of all our patrons.

    Masks will be encouraged throughout the lobby and in the Studio Theatre for these performances. Masks will be available at the box office and as you enter the theatre if you do not have one of your own.
